The original station was to be with two island platforms and three tracks for terminating trains, with a possible lower level supporting express trains (one island platform, two tracks). The station was shelved in 1975 in honor of a new station connecting to the IRT Lexington Avenue Line. The area in the original station was instead constructed as a yard from 125th Street to 129 Street, bearing 9 tracks. On May 1st, 1995, the two middle tracks were converted into revenue service and the 125th Street station on Second Avenue was opened with one island platform. The other 7 tracks are still used for train storage, although they now connect to the revenue tracks north and south of the station.
