As a plan to convert MTA into 100% electric, a pilot program for electric chargers were implemented in various areas in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. In January 2019, it was decided to test out long distance charging with portable chargers. Some stations were taken out of service after a year while most are still in operation at the time until the completion of the pilot testing.
